Sam Silverman is a testament to the extraordinary heights that can be reached when compassion and creativity intertwine. An abstract artist and a composer of classical music, Sam possesses a rare gift known as synesthesia—a condition that enables him to see sounds and hear shapes and colors. Sam draws inspiration from natural history, infusing his art and music with the beauty of organisms, plants, and animals. With over 400 musical compositions to his name, Sam’s artistic prowess extends into his abstract art showcased in his studio at ARTFUL in Cleveland Heights. His compositions have graced the stages of local venues, with professional pianists interpreting his works. The Cleveland Chamber Symphony has also celebrated his orchestral creations twice in concert, and presently, he is crafting a quintet for a ballet. A member of PLAN, JFSA’s membership-based program for adults with mental illness, he recently achieved an important milestone— moving into his own apartment with the assistance of JFSA. This step is particularly significant for Sam, given the mental health
challenges he faces. Now, in the privacy of his own space, he can fully immerse himself in his art and experience the freedom of independent living. “I got back into art because of PLAN,” according to Sam. “They provided a space for me to create and connect with others. My art and music bring me immense joy, and I owe so much to JFSA for helping me find this apartment. It’s truly life changing.” Becky Rinaldi, PLAN community activities administrator, is one of Sam’s biggest fans. “He is a really special guy who has so many talents and skills and works so hard to be successful at all of them. Everyone loves Sam’s art and music because it is so vivid and creative, and that encourages him even more,” she says. Sam’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that amidst the complexities of mental health challenges, there exists the potential for deep and captivating creativity and inspiration for us all.
